Challenge

Among Symetrix’ core line of products are Digital Signal Processors with Acoustic Echo Cancellation (AEC) functionality, customized by the customers via hardware option cards, according to the application. Instead of requiring customers to purchase additional hardware option cards, the team wanted to implement the same functionality through software.

Approach

Symetrix defined the requirements for cloud-based license management, which included the ability of end-users and integrators to be able to purchase the licenses from the cloud at any time, across the device lifecycle. Symetrix wanted its integrator partners to be able to purchase the licenses through their usual workflows, as well as to have the license as a line item on their purchase orders. Consultants needed to spec feature licenses as separate line items, and the process needed to be easy for both sides and simple to implement for Symetrix.

Solution

Symetrix elected to build the software license management through its AV-Ops Center, already built on Xyte and used for remote monitoring and management. Symetrix leveraged Xyte’s ecommerce capabilities and store feature to build a number of licenses available for its Server D100. Customers can visit the Symetrix store and purchase the license they need in an easy and straightforward manner. Licenses are then assigned to the right account and device. Transferring the software to the hardware is done utilizing an Xyte REST API. The device firmware then securely receives a notification of a new license and enables the corresponding functionality. 

In addition, Symetrix wanted its integrators to be able to purchase licenses at the same time they are purchasing the hardware, even when the purchase is done offline. The license purchase order can be easily added via the Xyte backend, whereby a shareable code is generated and a new license is assigned to the device.
